Managing Director David Bell studied at Birmingham University and gained an honours
degree in Physics. His early employment was with EMI Central Research Laboratories
in Hayes Middlesex, the home of stereo and the original location for the broadcast
of television in the UK. He was one of the design team that produced the first digital
recording studio in 1980. This featured a console with in-channel digital processing,
multi-channel and stereo tape recorders and editing facilities. The early recordings
included award winning releases from the London Symphony Orchestra amongst others
and a close association with Abbey Road Recording Studios was consequently
established. A period with the BBC followed, during which he was involved with
the design and building of a number of "General Purpose" and mobile recording
studios. The largest involvement was with the design and specification of the
first all digital console purchased from Neve. Considerable liaison and co-ordination
with over 300 BBC operational staff gave a deep understanding of the problems
associated with assignable console design and digital signal processing.
Six years at Solid State Logic followed, including project leadership of the
assignable analogue mixing desk project. Following the logical progression and
application of these design principles to digital processing, he worked on the
design and implementation of signal processing algorithms and the language used
to program the consoles. Much client contact occurred at this time, which led
to an introduction to Real World Studios and a year as digital systems advisor
to the facility.
Here he was introduced to Harris, Grant Associates who were completing work on
the Real World complex and became Technical Director of both the design company
and the holding group DRG Ltd in 1988. He also founded Discrete Systems Ltd, a
specialist technical engineering and installation company within the group,
becoming its Managing Director. In 1987 he left to form White Mark Limited,
conceived to be ideally suited to the project requirements of designing, building
and servicing recording studio projects world wide and dedicated to a level
of service and integration not previously offered in the industry
Some of the projects with which David Bell has been involved include:
Hit Factory Studios both in London and New York; Real World Studios in Bath, England;
many BBC studios in London; Sony Classical Studios in both Hamburg and London;
Strongroom in London; Reach Sound in New York State; Starstruck Studios in Nashville;
Buffo Studios in Warsaw; Barrandov Film Studios in Prague; Sony Music Studios in New
York; Solid State Logic’s demonstration studio in Begbroke; Grand Central Studios,
Molinare, TSI, M2, Underground Editing and Wave studios - all in London’s Soho post
production area.
He is a Chartered Engineer and holds Memberships of the Institute of Acoustics and the Institute of Electrical Engineers.
