Matt Dobson offers a custom monitor system design and supply
service together with monitor and room alignment and measurement. His previous
experience of industrial design and production engineering as Director
of Manufacturing with Soundcraft Ltd has been added to with subsequent
deep involvement in the design and manufacture of the Boxer T series of
monitors when Managing Director of Coastal Acoustics. This enables him
to bring the full range of experience of both extremely high end monitor
design techniques and the practicalities and engineering knowledge demanded
by today’s high technology machining and fabrication methods. Coastal Acoustics
was one of the sister companies of Harris, Grant Associates Ltd, a studio
design company, through whom Matt began a long association with David Bell
and Derek Buckingham, now of White Mark Limited.
Matt was instrumental in the development of the entire range of Boxer
monitors and the custom tooling required for their manufacture. He is retained
for ongoing system alignment for a number of Boxer based Studios world
wide because of his knowledge and experience of the necessary measurement
and set up techniques, but mainly because of the results he achieves. He
has pioneered the use of exceptional quality, high powered 5.1 systems
for music and post-production studios and has worked closely with both
Dolby and DTS on their specification and alignment. He is currently investigating
the approval by THX of direct radiating systems for smaller rooms.
Matt has been offering this service since early in 1977 and is currently
providing consultancy and design and acoustic measuring services to several
leading studios. A number of his projects have seen him working closely
with White Mark Ltd, further developing the long relationship he has with
the company’s principals. Projects recently completed include a fully custom
5.1 channel system for Grand Central Studios, London. By virtue of the
fully digital crossover array and its interface with a White Mark studio
Programmed Logic Controller, the system allows instant recall of a selection
of pre-programmed set ups via a desk mounted touch screen, offering the
ultimate in flexible multi-format direct radiating monitor systems.
Matt is equipped with the latest generation of portable digital measurement
systems from Audiomatica. This provides extensive and accurate loudspeaker
and room acoustic analysis including: MLS (Maximum Length Sequence), 2
channel FFT, Stepped and Gated Sine, Digitally filtered 1/3 octave analysis,
RT60 analysis, ETC (Energy Time Curve) analysis, Time History and Leq (equivalent
level) analysis, Transducer parameter derivation and Transducer distortion
measurement.
